Some find an inspirational story in the lives of people with disabilities, who, in turn can end up feeling objectified. When journalist Sandy Murillo, who’s blind, was complimented for simply showing up for a class, she had to stop herself from wisecracking, “Well, you’re inspirational for driving.”
Our collection of stories follows the lives of five Chicagoans whose experiences with a disability have shaped them, whether it’s through a powerful friendship, a thriving career or a strong family bond.
